Description
The EU sets maximum level for certain contaminants allowed in foodstuff with the "Commission Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 of 19 December 2006setting maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs" and amending and implementing acts. The contaminants regulated are nitrates, mycotoxins(aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, patulin and Fusarium toxins), heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury), monochloro-propane-1, 2- diol (3-MCPD), dioxins and dioxin-type PCBs, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and inorganic tin.In particular for fruit juice is set the maximum level of the mycotoxinepatuline; for groundnuts, nuts and dried fruit is defined the level of aflatoxins; level of Ochratoxin A is definedfor dried fruits; for mushrooms, it is stated the maximum amount of cadmium. The regulation specifies also rules for labelling on groundnuts, nuts, dried fruit, which have to include the wording "product must be subjected to sorting or other physical treatments to reduce aflatoxin contamination before human consumption or use as an ingredient in foodstuffs". These labelling must indicate identification code.
