Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 January 1997 concerning novel foods and novel food ingredients
EU Commission considers foods and food ingredients that have not been used for human consumption to a significant degree in the EU before 15 May 1997 "novel foods and novel food ingredients". Before they are placed on the market, tests carried out by the European Food Safety Authority must demonstrate that these products do not pose any risk to health or the environment.
