The city of Joensuu is the capital of North Karelia.
North Karelia is renowned among public health officials. In the 1960s Finland led industrialized nations in heart disease mortality rates. North Karelia had Finland's highest incidence. In 1972 a long-term project was undertaken which targeted this risk in North Karelia. The resulting improvement in public health is still considered remarkable, a model for the rest of the nation. |Name=Slovenian honey with protected geographical indication (SHPGI)
|Description=Slovenian honey with protected geographical indication is a system of product labelling ensuring the consumer the product is of Slovenian origin, meeting special, higher, quality standards. Slovenian honey in general is of relatively high quality. In addition to that Slovenia is quite self-sufficient (85% in 2009 and more that 100% in some years) in production of honey and the yearly per capita consumption is by 1.1 kg very much above world’s average of 0.2 kg. Nevertheless, price of honey does not seem to exhibit the quality of the product. Highlighting higher quality of produce by special brands (trade mark of protected geographical indication), such as the one described here addresses new market niches and higher added value can be achieved.

Beekeepers and facilities for processing honey have to meet special production and processing standards and then they can obtain a facility’s certificate and label their products with the above mentioned indication. The indication is a common trade mark (a brand) registered by Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association as intellectual property. The association also provides control over producers who utilize the indication and is the official holder of the protected brand. It is the umbrella organization of this system. It provides professional service to beekeepers/ production facilities that hold certificate for system of indication (control, standards, labels and promotion) by engaging public consulting service in beekeeping and Committee of the association’s management board for the indication. Association also provides data on producers of the indication to third parties.

The regulation supporting this instrument: Rules on a Slovenian honey with protected geographical indication, which is based on provisions of 2. par. of art. 86 of the Agriculture Act.

The certificate for the indication is valid for 4 years. Frequency of internal control is set by outcomes of previous controls. More than 200 beekeepers or other honey producing facilities holds a certificate for the indication.

{{European policy
|Name=Wild game and hunting act, 2004 (Slovenia)
|Description=This Act regulates game management, which includes planning, conservation, sustainable management and monitoring of game and the methods of their implementation.

Wild Game and Hunting Act states that the government of the Republic of Slovenia (grantor) gives concession on sustainable game management for a specific hunting area.

Basic organizational units holding management rights are (1) hunting areas and (2) state hunting reserves with special purpose.

State hunting reserves with special purpose (12 of them) are established by the government and are aimed to carry out special tasks in conservation and management of game populations. Reserves comprise of areas of highly preserved and distinct natural areas.

Concessions for managing game and hunting are given by the state to the managers of hunting areas, which should hold at least 2000 ha of hunting grounds. Managers (concessioner) of hunting areas (408 of those) are hunting associations (411 of those in Slovenia). Concession rights are obtained via public tender for determined period of time and should be given to managers for at least 20 years. The concession agreement consists of: the subject of concession; criteria that have to be met by the concessioner; start and duration of agreement; concession fee and the way it is paid; rights of the grantor to control concessioner; definition of public tender; content of the concession agreement. Concession fee is paid every year, 50% to the state and 50% to the municipality (or to municipalities in shares equal to proportions of the hunting area within individual municipalities). The fee equals to min of 15% of all revenues (5-year avg.) concessioner receives from selling game meat and hunting tourism. The Decree on awarding concessions for sustainable game management defined that concessions are given for 20 years; first agreements start in 2009.

A person is allowed to hunt as long as it has a valid hunter’s identification card and has passed a special test or is employed in a reserve. One who does not meet these requirements can hunt only accompanied by one who does. Hunting quotas are set for each association. Membership in a hunting association does not prerequisites men’s rights to hunt.

There is no such type as recreational or self-consumption hunting, except for dormouse (''Glis glis'' L.), but one needs a permit from the local hunting association.

{{European policy
|Name=Rules on the register of bee forage sources, bee forage organisation and the bee forage forecast programme, 2013 (Slovenia)
|Description=Bee pasture management rules are basic set of rules for beekeeping. This rules enable the beekeeper to set the beehives on designated spots (also in forest), for which he/she has to apply in advance; spots have to be agreed upon the landowner (written agreement or a contract); and the cadastre of bee pastures have to exhibit presence of honeyflow (honeydew) capable plant species.

The beekeeper has to comply with specific rules (registered beehives, agreement with the landowner, number of beehives, min. distance to the next spot …) to be able to do beekeeping and produce honey/bee-products.

The operator of bee pasture management rules are local beekeeping associations – they award the beekeeping spots and also provide a link between beekeepers, landowners and official services.

There is no provisions on fees for the spots (between landowner and the beekeeper). It is usually compensated by means of payment in kind – honey or other bee products.

There is no special division between professional and self-consumption form of beekeeping.

Beehives can be a part of the farm by definition of the farm estate, and for those, above mentioned rules do not comply.
